Digital instructional design

Below is a worked example of how I help to solve a training and compliance problem for an employer.

The problem:

There were too many instances of near non-compliance with providers of a Level 3 course.  It was mainly down to lack of knowledge and understand of the often complicated grading model and regulator expectations.  The challenge was to ensure all stakeholders could raise their levels of understanding to ensure compliance was improved.

The solution:

We began with the usual ADDIE approach and analysed the issue.  I decided that a wholesale upskilling approach was needed and the training would be fully online and modular, but one where participants could choose whether they attempted all modules or just those they felt they needed or were directed to by the awarding organisation.  Applying Mayer’s Principles, learning is carefully crafted to maximise accessibility for everyone and using Gagne’s 9 levels of instruction, learning is delivered, supported and assessed well.  I ensured that there is both assessment for and of learning in the form of formative and summative assessments respectively.

I used a persona template to create a ‘typical’ learner who needs this programme and this helped to formulate the direction of travel when it came to learning design.

I then created a wireframe outline using Miro software.  this enabled me to plan the whole course to see how it would all fit together.  Modules and lessons within were identified.

After the initial analysis, I developed a set of learning outcomes and mapped these to the seven modules I decided were necessary to ensure participants could demosntrate mastery.

If a learner wanted to complete all modules in the programme, then this is the advised flow of modules.  Each module centres on a key aspect of the qualification regulatory and awarding body requirements.

Each module would be constructed in a way where students would access the content, attempts self assessment questions before applying the learning to a problem solving sceanrio.

I decided to allow learners to decide how they attempted the modules on the course.  So, after the mandatory 1st one, learners are free to choose which ones they complete depending upon their needs.

The outcome:

Sadly the company ceased to trade so the training wasn’t fully tested but early feedback from pilot testing was favourable.  However, I hope I have demosntrated I have the necessary skills and knowledge to approach an online training learning approach.
